Looking Ahead to Mobile World Congress 2017

Every year the top mobile executives from across the globe converge in Barcelona to experience the latest developments in mobile technology, from shiny new gadgets to revolutionary apps and everything in between.

Ahead of this year’s conference, we spoke with a few mobile veterans at OpenX about their past experiences, greatest memories and predictions for what we’ll see. Here’s what they had to say:

Maggie Mesa, VP, Mobile Business Development

What are you looking forward to most at Mobile World Congress?

Seeing new technologies – AR VR was big last year and I’m looking forward to seeing and experiencing new headset and VR tech.

Secondly, seeing old friends. It’s a great show where people from every continent attend and Barcelona is a beautiful host city.

What sets Mobile World Congress apart from other industry events?

The amazing Spanish food! And the combination of telco, software, hardware, and ad tech all coming together for one crazy week.

What advice do you have for first-time Mobile World Congress attendees?

Drink a lot of water.

What was your most memorable Mobile World Congress experience?

I have too many fond memories, but certainly at the top of my list is having a gin and tonic with a partner at the W and then going for a stroll on the beach until we run into colleagues at Opium Mar.

Josh Garcia, Senior Manager, Mobile Business Development

Which brand are you excited to hear from at Mobile World Congress and why?

I am most excited to hear from Niantic, the makers of Pokemon GO, on how they plan to inject some new excitement into the game as users are leaving the once dominant title.  Since it was the first big augmented reality success on mobile, I wonder how they will parlay this technology into other games or projects.

What is your game plan for having a successful Mobile World Congress?

My game plan for a great MWC is to set up a lot of meetings ahead of time, but to also set aside time for meeting new contacts on the floor. Luckily we have put together a great exhibition booth (Hall 8.1 Stand F70!) and will have representatives from all mobile teams on hand to engage with passersby. I’ve also looked into the best after hour parties catering to mobile apps and advertising which should be a great time to meet new clients as well as bond with other OpenX’ers!

What are you looking forward to most at Mobile World Congress?

MWC provides an excellent global venue to network across the entire breadth of the mobile ecosystem. As mobile advertising continues to grow and expand through diverse technology offerings, I’m most intrigued to see what new players have emerged in the space to assist brands in promoting their offerings. I’m also excited to hear more about the headway that VR is making, allowing for a hands on approach of branding, pushing interactive advertising to new levels.
