I have a website which is based on a non-PHP language - can I use OpenX?

Yes, OpenX can display banners on any website no matter what language the website is written in. We would suggest you use the javascript or iFrame invocation tags for displaying banners on your website.

Only the Local Mode invocation tag will work with PHP websites only. XML-RPC invocation tags are available for advanced users and, although it contains an example PHP file for illustrative purposes, it can be used with nearly any programming language.

Who can I get to help install/upgrade OpenX?

Installing OpenX is similar to installing any other web application on your web server. This is a job which someone with basic web administration skills would be comfortable doing. We've included detailed installation and configuration documentation on the OpenX website to guide you through the process.

If you are looking for technical support installing and configuring OpenX you might like to consider:

  1. Contacting a local web development company near you
  2. Posting your request on the consulting section of the OpenX forum.

The OpenX development team can be contracted to install and configure high availability server farms capable of serving billions of ads each month. Contact us to find out more.

Why is PHP 4.3.11 the minimum version?

We test OpenX with the latest release of PHP 4.3, 4.4, 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2. You should always upgrade your PHP version to the latest release, to ensure that you have the most stable, bug free and secure version of PHP that is available. Contact your hosting provider and ask them to upgrade your system if they manage your hosting.

If you're stuck on PHP < 4.3.11, and simply cannot upgrade, you can install OpenX anyway. However, we cannot provide any guarantee that OpenX will work correctly, and we are unlikely to be able to help you with any problems that arise if those problems are a result of running a (very) old version of PHP.

Please note: There are known bugs in PHP 4.4.1 that prevent OpenX from working. As a result, OpenX 2.4 will not allow you to install on this version.
